Pastoral Discontinuation Due to Dissatisfaction
Policy Section 1250
In the case of a minister facing discontinuation of a pastoral role (ex: senior pastor, associate pastor, ordained deacon) due to dissatisfaction with his ministry, care shall be taken to exercise appropriate procedures in dealing with the situation. Unilateral (one-sided, single-handed, independent) resig-nation or dismissals are not appropriate.
When a minister feels a need to discontinue because of dissatisfaction with his ministry, the concept of requesting release from responsibility, rather than by individualistic resignation, is encouraged. Outside assistance and counsel should be received if the congregation and its leadership are unable to give their approval and/or blessing to the requested release from responsibility.
When a congregation or congregational leadership considers a minister's discontinuation, the involvement of a CMC overseer or bishop or the Executive Board or a conciliation committee appointed by the Executive Board should be sought before attempting final steps of such discontinuation. The privilege of appeal to the Executive Board is open to the minister and others involved in the process.
